Summer is here despite the weeks of constant rain here in DC. However that doesn’t mean we weren’t able to create a waterfront wedding at Intercontinental Wharf DC.
Did you know that roughly 25% of couples have a destination wedding outside of their state? But not all destinations have to be outside of your state if you can find a venue with the perfect waterfront view. We chose the Wharf Intercontinental because it overlooks the Potomac River and it’s one of the newest developments in DC.
Selecting the perfect DC wedding venue is step two for how to plan a wedding. Step one is knowing what wedding theme and or style you are going with. Thankfully a venue near water scaled down our selection and The Intercontinental Wharf DC was a great decision.
Because of the floor to ceiling windows in the venue, we wanted to use a light palette with a powerful blue base. This allowed us to ensure our clients maintained the fresh light of being outdoors and were reminded of the blue ocean during this indoor reception.

The hotel’s ballroom had the perfect wedding color scheme to work with. Thankfully you will not find super weird carpet colors in this DC Venue. We matched the BBJ Linen to the gold pattern in the carpet and began to construct the head table.
On the table itself, we paired blue, gold, white, and pink. This palette allowed us to cater to both the DC bride and groom. The bold blue chargers from BBJ Linen helped to rush in the ocean’s tide complimented by the floral vases from DC Wedding Florist Violet Gardens Floral Designs. We wanted to keep the overall palette light because the blue was so dark and bold. To do that we selected white plates, flatware and tea cups from DC wedding rental company Something Vintage Rentals and a wedding menu card from Arlington, VA Stationery company Fingers In Ink.

One 2018 wedding trend we have been screaming about is the oversized floral ring. A floral ring can be used for your wedding ceremony or wedding reception. It’s the perfect backdrop for you and we decided to incorporate it here. Floral rings can come in various sizes and can be filled with flowers. However, we wanted this one to be subtle and elegant so we went with strategically placed flowers on the ring. Remember not every wedding needs to be over-the-top in décor.

Our last order of business was the wedding cake. We could have easily create a typical ocean themed wedding cake with sea stars, sand, and a few boats, but we wanted something else. Our Maryland Wedding Baker Angyono Custom Cakes created a electric multi-tier wedding cake that was 3 ft high.

The goal in creating a wedding design concept is to ensure that it is cohesive. The best way to do that is to select a primary color and then a few complimenting colors. Although you may have one or two wedding colors, that doesn’t mean those need to be the only colors in your wedding design. Accent colors are always welcomed and will help you have a remarkable wedding.
